EMI/EMC Frames for shielding – the Electro Magnetic Compatibility

Shielding, not only for cable assemblies and glands, is becoming an increasingly important part of electrical engineering. In applications such as automotive, navigation systems, routers, or even RFID applications, a missing EM shielding can lead to failures and malfunctions. The applicable properties are regulated in the EM Directive (2014/30/EU) in the EU-market and are intended to ensure the interference-free functioning of the equipment used. With technology constantly developing, the issue of EM is becoming increasingly important in today's connected modern world.

The EMC shielding

EM shielding's are used to protect against electromagnetic emissions, even directly on the PCB, to ensure reliable operation. A suitable shielding design can ensure the reliable operation of RFID applications. For more complex circuit designs and applications, the shielding frame can also be constructed in several sections, with different cells, to ensure that the individual components are shielded directly on the PCB.

The shielding not only protects against “incoming radiation,” but also prevents radiation from being emitted. An appropriate shielding design is therefore important to ensure the long-term reliability of the applications.

 

The EMI Design

EM shielding's for electronic housings, shielding frames for printed circuit boards, or even EM frames for testing rooms can feature different designs. One-piece frames for simpler applications, which are soldered directly onto the PCB, are used just as much as multi-piece variants made up of a frame and cover. With multi-piece variants, it is important to ensure that the connection between the frame and cover is as even and as large as possible. Only the best possible connection in the right design will achieve a correspondingly good shielding effect.

The material used for the shielding is also an important factor that must be taken into account for the shielding effect, as different materials have different shielding effects. Only by combining the right material with the right design a suitable shielding effect will be achieved.

Hybrid solutions

Depending on the application requirements, it may be necessary for EM shieldings to also provide cooling performance. Although this requirement is rather rare, we also have a suitable option for this with our hybrid solutions. The use of an EM shielding frame with a black surface improves cooling performance via heat radiation, eliminating the need for an additional heat sink. In such applications, however, care must be taken to ensure that the shielding frames are not fitted with a heat-conducting film. This must always be checked carefully, as depending on the film, a capacity may be generated that affects the shielding performance. A design that does not require a film is recommended, so that the frame fits directly on the active component.
