Dr. Merkel studied physics at Mainz University. He worked that at CERN in Geneva/CH on data acquistion and control systems for particle detectors before returning to Germany taking different positions as product owner for industrial communication technologies such as CANopen and EtherNet/IP. Dr. Merkel has been involved in the CANopen standardization process since 2003 and joined CAN in Automation in March 2024 to take over the position as technical manager overseeing the CiA specification work.
